Carson's Copper Clapper Caper

The discussion in the comments on the Johnny Carson interview with Jim Henson and his alter ego mentioned another classic moment: Jack Webb's deadpan participation in the investigation of a crime involving all-too-many hard consonants.

The humor doesn't seem particularly dated to me -- funny is funny -- and it's clear from whence Letterman draws much of his inspiration. Too bad he can't seem to master Carson's affability, his class.

There are a number of internet flame wars touting the strengths and weaknesses of both Leno and Letterman. Jay is not really a strong interviewer. Dave is better once the guests walk on stage, and he seems better at getting personal answers and good anecdotes.

I do enjoy Jay Leno for his great timing and monologue skills. Dave has that little mood problem, at least before junior came along, and it's pushed me away from really sticking with his show. I'm thinking, Dave you've got a stressful job but you do get paid well, and if the nice homes and endless admiration don't mean anything to you... you should hear about my day.

Sure, Jay can miss the boat on a guest segment but at least he's happy to be there. He does have an odd habit of looking off-stage while the interview is in progress. Surprised he hasn't worked that out, because it always looks a little spastic, A.D.D. He looks to the director for commercial breaks and maybe show content, but he needs to be more like Johnny. Smooth as silk.

On second thought, Johnny made a tough job look easy. No wonder he was an introvert at the end of the day! He was such a master of his craft, it was all organic. After he gave at the office, I think he had to go home and regroup.
