Sun, sand, surf, SUV on your sternum

This what-a-way-to-go tale just happened a few miles away down the coast from us, at a hotel that's hosted many a D.A. function.

Police run over, kill sunbather

A sunbather lying on the beach was killed this afternoon when she was run over by Oxnard police officers on routine beach patrol near the Embassy Suites Hotel Mandalay Beach Resort, authorities said.

Two officers were driving a Chevy Tahoe, an Oxnard Police Department vehicle, when they ran over the woman about 2 p.m., police said.

The officers weren't immediately aware they had hit someone . . . A witness called 911 to report that the vehicle had run over a sunbather and didn't stop. The witness also tried to flag down the police.

... [T]he vehicle had gone over a quick drop in the sand before hitting the woman, and the officers didn't see the sunbather or the witness trying to flag them down.

I've never understood why beaches are patrolled by full-size trucks and SUVs, for precisely this reason. Seems like quads -- or similar ATVs -- provide an effective means of covering lots of ground, while lessening the risk of snoozing sunbathers becoming speedbumps.

A bad day for Oxnard's finest; a worse day for the hapless sun worshipper.

Holly shit! This is unbelieveable. All that talk about gangs in Oxnard and a stupid cop driving a three ton SUV on the beach, runs over an innocent civilian in front of the best beach resort in Ventura County. I thought I'd heard it all until now. I hope the public holds the driver and the chief responsible. Very sad....

That story is beyond sad. I guess we'll see it on CSI: Miami in a month or two, after they lift it from one of the newswires.

I didn't know full-size vehicles were patrolling beaches. Could be time to try smaller vehicles.

When it's your time to die, it's your time to die. I had a buddy from the first gulf war who was over there with me. Not a guy in our unit got so much as a scratch. He came home and got himself barbecued while installing wiring in a home he was building with his father. Who would have thought the poor SOB would go out like that? Sure not me. Sure not his wife and 2year old daughter.

Life builds you up and then kicks you in the f***ing balls. Accept that fact and you won't be surprised. It don't mean nothin!

It's pretty shocking to hear about what happened at your local beach.

I have a brother in Arizona who killed a guy in a traffic collision that was riding a motorcycle. Even though it was nothing but an accident my brother was prosecuted like a criminal. Stupid!

I don't know how the laws work in California but I'm sure that cop will never get treated like my brother. Cops, judges and lawyers always look out for their own.

As for the poor woman on the beach, may she rest in peace. May her family heal. May Jesus Christ comfort her soul and accept her into the Kindom. Amen.
