Noted in passing

During a recent dinner with friends, one of them referred to the latest collection of high-end furniture and decorating catalogs on the coffeetable as "House Porn."

I thought that was a marvelously descriptive phrase, both for the mainstreaming of pornography in the national lexicon, as well as the way it captures the almost sensual pleasure many people derive from langorously leafing through the glossy pages of these lushly photographed, mailbox-clogging magazines.

Interesting company you keep. These clearly are not church going people. Perhaps they should call their love see a "rape platform." Pornography is the devil's work. It objectifies women and displays the saddest moment in the lives of many young women who were down on their luck, high on drugs, dealing with prior molestation, and exploited by an uncaring industry that worships money over human dignity. Your little ditty to pornography is to your shame.

Ben,

If you re-read what I wrote, nowhere did I offer a "ditty" praising pornography; instead I was noting a new meaning -- or useage -- for a word heretofore used in reference to something far afield from the tasteful renovation or furnishing of one's home.

Thus, I feel no shame. But I appreciate that you felt strongly enough to leave the comment.

Ben: It's a shame what your mother went through. But I bought every one of her tapes!
