Bush's real problem is Jim Baker . . . an old-line temporizer, appeaser, and waffler who did his best (but failed) to turn RR into a moderate and then did his best work with the elder Bush . . . at great cost to America.
The recent idea that Cheney ought to resign so a more moderate Republican could be positioned for 2008 is quintessential Baker. When Bush announced that Baker was coming back as an advisor, I said goodbye to any pretense of genuine conservatism in the White House.
